American Express has committed to supporting the Australian music industry through their newly launched Music Backers Program. The program gives “music businesses, artists and fans the opportunity to share in $1 million worth of value across the next 12 months” in order to provide a much needed boost to the Australian music industry.

Iconic live music venue, Selina’s in Coogee, was announced as the first recipient of the program. The venue celebrated their newly-announced grant in a one-night-only secret performance by international superstars The Killers. The American Express hosted event saw an intimate crowd gather at Selina’s last Wednesday for an hour long set of all the band’s hits including Smile Like You Mean It, When You Were Young, Run For Cover and of course Mr Brightside.

The venue at Coogee Bay Hotel may be a far cry from The Killers’ usual arena extravaganzas, but front man Brandon Flowers brought his signature energy and showmanship regardless – complete with light show and confetti cannons. Selina’s is known for hosting some of the best rock bands in the world, and in addition to all their classics, the band made sure to pay tribute to Selina’s roots with a cover of INXS’ Don’t Change which had the whole crowd singing along.

Selina’s will be using their funding to renovate tired aspects of the venues interior and have applauded American Express for their support which will help reinvigorate the Sydney live music scene.

The grant is now open to any businesses, venues or artists in need of support – whether that’s through mentorship, financial support or tools to help them succeed. By introducing this program, American Express hopes to reconnect music fans with extraordinary music experiences and turn the spotlight on the vibrant live music scene in Australia.

Top industry professionals including Roger Field CEO of Live Nation Australasia, will be assessing applications and awarding numerous grants throughout the year.

“Whether you’re a venue looking for new ways to attract fans and new business, an artist seeking an introduction in the industry, or a die-hard fan who’s after tickets to see their favourite artist, The American Express Music Backers Program is designed for you.  I’m proud to be part of an initiative that will support the industry on a number of levels and it’s great that this will give something back to a scene that so many Australians are passionate about”, said Roger Field.

Applications are now open for The American Express Music Backers Program for any businesses, venues and artists in the industry in need of backing.
